Report to Congress: Gulf War syndrome is real

A scientific panel chartered by Congress cites nerve gas drug and pesticides used during the conflict as being associated with veterans' neurological problems.

Contradicting nearly two decades of government denials, a congressionally mandated scientific panel has concluded that Gulf War syndrome is real and still afflicts nearly a quarter of the 700,000 U.S. troops who served in the 1991 conflict.

John H. Menkes dies at 79; doctor established UCLA's pediatric neurology program

Dr. John H. Menkes, the pediatric neurologist who identified Menkes disease, maple syrup urine disease and other congenital disorders of the neural system and established the pediatric neurology program at UCLA, died Nov. 22 at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles of complications of cancer. He was 79.

Carl Pearson: distinguished neuroscientist and GP

Carl Pearson was a distinguished neuroscientist who made a significant contribution to the study of Alzheimer’s disease. An inspiring teacher, he was a senior lecturer at St Mary’s Hospital Medical School before becoming Professor of Neuroscience at Sheffield Univeristy. He was later appointed Chair of Neuroscience in Sheffield but abandoned this prestigious role to embark on a radical career change. After spending a year teaching undergraduates in Tanzania, he returned to the UK to become a GP working in Sunderland and Newcastle upon Tyne.
