Carl Pearson: distinguished neuroscientist and GP

Carl Pearson was a distinguished neuroscientist who made a significant contribution to the study of Alzheimer’s disease. An inspiring teacher, he was a senior lecturer at St Mary’s Hospital Medical School before becoming Professor of Neuroscience at Sheffield Univeristy. He was later appointed Chair of Neuroscience in Sheffield but abandoned this prestigious role to embark on a radical career change. After spending a year teaching undergraduates in Tanzania, he returned to the UK to become a GP working in Sunderland and Newcastle upon Tyne.

Menkes, the pediatric neurologist who identified Menkes disease, maple syrup urine disease and other congenital disorders of the neural system and established the pediatric neurology program at UCLA, died Nov. 22 at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles of complications of cancer. He was 79.
